Can Medical Marijuana Help to Alleviate Neuropathic Pain?

Neuropathic pain is a condition that impacts approximately 1 in 10 adults aged 30. It’s typically chronic, leading to persistent pain that can be disruptive to your day-to-day activities.

People with neuropathic pain have reported that marijuana use is helpful in reducing their pain, as well as improving their quality of sleep and mood. Here, we’ll explore medical marijuana use for neuropathy and how you can learn if this treatment option is right for you.

What is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is nerve damage, and it can stem from a broad variety of conditions. It may also result from certain treatments, like chemotherapy. Symptoms of neuropathy include:

  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Tingling, burning, or prickling
  • Higher sensitivity to touch
  • Muscle weakness
  • Paralysis

Unfortunately, neuropathy is irreversible. But, there are several ways to manage its symptoms. For many patients, medical marijuana is an effective treatment for neuropathic pain.

Evidence of Medical Marijuana For Neuropathic Pain

A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that cannabis use had positive effects for adults with neuropathic pain. The study had 21 participants who completed the trial, all of which were adults with post-traumatic or postsurgical neuropathic pain. The participants were randomly assigned to receive cannabis at different potencies, 0%, 2.5%, 6%, or 9.4% tetrahydrocannabinol. The results of the study revealed that one inhalation of 25 mg of 9.4% tetrahydrocannabinol cannabis three times per day for five days lowered pain intensity and improved sleep quality in the participants.

Other studies have resulted in additional evidence that medical marijuana is an effective treatment for neuropathic pain. While further research is still to be done on the long-term effects of marijuana in this application, it’s a promising option for patients seeking ways to manage neuropathy.
