Properly Storing Your Cannabis

If medical cannabis is part of your treatment plan, storage is more important than you might think. Although cannabis doesn’t have a strict expiration date, it can diminish in quality if it’s not properly stored.

By storing your cannabis properly, you can protect its valuable cannabinoids and terpenes while ensuring that it lasts as long as possible – up to a year or two, in many cases. Read on for our top cannabis storage tips.

Elements To Consider When Storing Your Cannabis

Certain elements can degrade the quality of your cannabis, including temperature, humidity, and exposure to light and air.

Storing your cannabis in temperatures that are either too hot or too cold can diminish the flower’s terpenes and cannabinoids. This leads to weakened benefits for various health conditions.

On the other hand, storing your cannabis in an overly-humid environment can encourage mold growth. But, if the environment is too dry, cannabis can become brittle and bitter. With this in mind, the ideal humidity for storing cannabis is between 55% and 65%.

When cannabis is exposed to high levels of oxygen, the cannabinoids and terpenes become more susceptible to deterioration, leading to less potency. Exposure to UV rays from the sun also causes cannabis degradation.

How To Properly Store Cannabis

To ensure the highest possible level of quality and potency, follow these tips to store your medical cannabis:

  • Invest in an airtight glass container, like a mason jar. Glass is known as the best material for storing cannabis, as metal can alter the flower’s aroma and taste. Steer clear of plastic, which can cause cannabinoid and terpene-rich trichomes of the flower to break off.
  • Keep the cannabis out of direct sunlight and in a room that’s below 70℉.
  • Store the cannabis in a dark, cool place. But, don’t store it in the refrigerator or freezer, as they can cause mold and mildew growth.
  • Keep the cannabis out of humid environments and pack your chosen container tightly to limit oxygen exposure.
